Virgin Galactic Space Tourism

Space Tourism Virgin Galactic takes on the world view

It seems that sky is not the limit after all, literally. There’s been a lot of research and development going on in the science & tech world, related to space travelling and tourism, thus there are several firms trying to make it possible.

Having explored the Earth to its core, the companies are now trying to reach out now, i.e. in the space. World View and Virgin Galactic are two leading firms, moving ahead in the field of space tourism. While the main motto of Richard Branson’s baby Virgin Galactic remains to make possible tourism at an altitude of about 360,000 feet, the humble World View will target the 100,000 feet altitude.

Since Virgin Galactic will be offering sub-orbital rides, the cost normally goes up, to ~$250,000, as compared to that of World View’s, $75,000.

Virgin Galactic Space Tourism-PING

Some of the differences between the two rides are:

  • Since Virgin Galactic will take you in the space, you’ll be able to feel the weightlessness. Yea, you get to fly. On the other hand, with World View, you’ll remain under the influence of gravity.

  • The two firms employ different techniques to take you up there. While Virgin Galactic offers a rocket propelled ride, World View’s Helium balloon will take your gondola up there.

  • The last and the most significant difference lies in the amount of time that you get to adore the space. With Virgin Galactic, despite the above mentioned perks, you don’t get much time to stay in the space, but with World View’s “spacecraft”, you get to spend a handsome couple of hours!

As more and more firms rise, the cost will automatically come down, and who knows, you’ll be reading this blog from up there then!

Sub Heineken’s Countertop Chills Beer

Sub Heineken’s Countertop Chills Beer

With even start-ups now offering beer pints as perks to the employees, you must already know how important beer has become!

Be it during the soccer match, or the ICC World Cup, or a date, or even a night at the disc, a chilled beer is always in demand. To cater to this demand of the people, although there are several cooling products already available in the market, but the leading market player, “Heineken” has come up with a brand new product called “The Sub”.

Yea, as you’d have already noticed it, the name is inspired from the word “Submarine”, because of the design of the appliance. The Sub lets you to chill your beer to an awesome 2 degrees temperature, thus abiding by the “Chiller the beer, better it is” law!

Sub Heineken’s Countertop Chills Beer1-PING

On the design front, Marc Newson, a very well-known product designer, has put his genius to do the work, as a result of which the product that we get is ‘beer-friendly’, and pouring the beer out of the appliance are a piece of cake. The Sub is compact in size, and weighs about 6.8kg, hence fits in your kitchen without much of an effort.

The body of this chiller is made up of pressurized aluminum, while the tray inside it is of Magnetic drip type. From the inside, the Sub can contain about 2L of beer, which’s sufficient for a session!

The noise levels during the operation are moderate, at 25dB, and also, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket with the electricity bill, as it has been accredited with an A+ energy rating.

The only con about The Sub is its, at present, incompatibility with other brands.

The Sub comes with a 2yr warranty.

Frank the World"s first bionic man

Frank the World’s first bionic man

Remember that robo girl from the hit tele series “Small Wonder”? Well, the concept has finally materialized with the invention of what is now being hailed as the, “World’s first bionic man”, named, Frank, which is a nick, derived from the word ‘Frankenstein’.

Frank is not your day-to-day robot like ASIMO by Sony, etc, but it is, in literal terms, a perfect example of human meeting a machine. It is made up of 28 artificial and several other synthetic organs, which are similar to those found in you and me, including a beating heart! Yes, it’s that real!

Built by the engineers at Shadow Robot Co in England, ‘Frank’ is the baby of Dr Bertolt Meyer’s mind, who himself has an embedded bionic arm, and is a professor at the University of Zurich.

Frank the World

The artificial organs in this real life technological miracle were contributed by several laboratories from across the globe. On the technical front, Frank has more than 200 processors working for it to facilitate various activities like walking and talking. To give it a more real feel, the engineers have put in more than 1000 sensors beneath the robo’s skin, to ensure that the “touch” and “temperature changes” sensations are felt by it, and accordingly responded to.

Frank is by far the most realistic humanoid that has been made, as it has organs, limbs, eyes, etc just like us. Building this machine burnt a hole of about 1 million dollars in the pocket of investors.

Although we cannot ignore the fact that Frank’s walking speed is quite a competitor to that of a snail’s, but it is surely a huge step in the field of bionics.

Google Nexus 5 Review by PING Nigeria

Google Nexus 5 Review by PING Nigeria

Google Nexus 5 has been on the radars of on-line magazines and media channels for a while now. HTC has been teasing the features of the next Google Nexus phone and so far with all the buzz going on there is no doubt it is working. It is rumoured that Google Nexus 5 will be released this October. Yesterday  Google Nexus 5 was accidentally released on Google Play. It showed a 16GB version of the phone for $349.

Google Nexus 5 on Google Play-PING

Here are some of the things Google Nexus 5 will offer you.

Larger HD Screen

The Google Nexus 5 will features 4-inch display with full HD playback capabilities.

More Disk Space

The predecessor of Google Nexus was criticized because of its storage space. HTC saw that as a weakness and will be offering more disk space and ability to increase disk space using a SD card. It is still unclear whether Google is planning to release different versions of the same phone with more space or not.

Notification Light

The previous models of Nexus featured notification lights. The Nexus 5 will not be any different. It will also feature a notification light to alert the user and might also support wireless charging.

New Processor

It is confirmed that the Google Nexus 5 will run on the latest version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Majority of the mobile phones nowadays are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Due to its portability and operating system support Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 was the logical choice for the new Google Nexus 5.

LTE Support

The previous version of Google Nexus did not include LTE support. However, the new Nexus has been rumored to include LTE support as well.

Amazon Firetube Review by PING Nigeria

October 2013 has been an incredible month for the gadget and technology addicts. However, unlike the mobile phone war or the latest Laptop war, a new type of war is brewing in the technology industry. It is rumored that Amazon filed a trademark application for a device called the Firetube. It is also suspected that this device will directly rival the Apple TV or the Roku. The main idea behind the Amazon’s Firetube is to stream content from the Amazon Network to the user’s television sets.

Amazon Firetube1-PING

With Amazon onDemand already proven a huge success, there is no doubt that Firetube will become a major product the consumers will adopt very easily. The Wall Street Journal supported this claim by saying, Amazon’s TV Box will “serve as a delivery vehicle for Amazon’s existing streaming video service. ” Majority of the TV manufacturers are designing Televisions that are not just LCD with full HD but they make sure their TV has built in support for popular streaming services, has games, useful applications and ultimately connects to the Wireless Internet.

Amazon Firetube rademark-PING

So, it’s no surprise that Amazon would not think about tapping into this market and offer a box of its own featuring some of the applications you may already find in your smart TV or a console device like PS3 or a X-Box. It is still unclear whether the Firetube will make Amazon onDemand service any more attractive but there is no doubt that in terms of high quality content Amazon will be competing head to head with Netflix, Roku, Hulu and other companies that allow you to stream high quality videos on demand.

Android 4.4 KitKat Review by PING Nigeria

October 2013 has to be the best month for the gadget folks. From Google to HTC to Nintendo there are lots of new electronic devices that are released this month. It has been rumored that Google is planning to release its Android version 4.4 – KitKat this October as well. iOS is undoubtedly one of the most popular and used operating system in the mobile market. However, ever since Android was released to the general public by Google, it forever changed the mobile market and gave Apple a healthy competition. It is still not clear why the name Kit-Kat was dubbed for Android 4.4.

Android 4.4 KitKat -PING

However, as the saying goes what’s in a name. Here are the current expected features from Android 4.4 KitKat. The predecessors for Android 4.4 requires a significant amount of hardware power to perform at its best. So, it was rumored that Google spent an extensive amount of its time optimizing and updating the Android operating system. It is said that the new Android 4.4 KitKat will run efficiently on as little as 512 MB of RAM.

In February 2013 Android Central informed that Google is working actively on the Linux 3.8 kernel. Unlike other operating system Linux is well known for its efficient usage of memory. Making it part of the Android device will give Android a huge boost in its overall performance. Other than that it is expected that Android 4.4 KitKat will be released on the 14th of this month and will feature gallery tweaks, updated API for animation, and notification updates.

LG G2 Smartphone Review by PING Nigeria

What to expect from LG G2?

LG G2 is a powerful smartphone with a huge 5.2-inch Full HD phone with a powerful quad-core 2.2GHz processor, 13MP camera and an impressively large 3,000mAh battery.

With all kinds of phones available nowadays it is difficult for companies to create an unique design that is both useful and attractive at the same time. And it is also equally if not more difficult to pick a phone over so many choices available to you. For example, Samsung Galaxy, iPhone 5s, Moto X and so many more. In terms of features and the basic hardware design almost all phones serve the same purpose… so what makes LG G2 any different?

The new LG G2 is no less than a personal computer. It comes jam packed with hardware and software that you may find on a traditional tablet or a laptop that is only couple of years old.

The LG G2 has been dubbed the AIO. It is an all in one solution to a smart-phone. For example, you get LCD display, 1920 x 1080 HD, 2 GHz quad-core CPU, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB disk-space, 13 MP camera, Wi-Fi, blue-tooth, Android 4 operating system, and it is only 9 mm thick to fit the right size.

There are some interesting changes to the design. For example, you will find the buttons are below the camera. Even though the phone is 9.1 mm thick, it somehow was able to house a 11.4 Wh battery. Like any other updates the phone features a new theme for the display, and touch-screen buttons on the screen.

Even though the phone features an impressive amount of hardware, it is still not known how the overall experience is going to be or how well the hardware and software will compliment each other.

We at PING Nigeria see great thing happening for LG mobile in 2014. what do you think?

Atomo Rapid New Malaria Test Kit Made in Africa

Atomo Rapid is an award winning Australian healthcare company, Atomo Diagnostics will introduce its innovative malaria testing kit at the 6th MIM Pan-African malaria conference held in Durban. It was developed by Australian healthcare company Atomo Diagnostics and currently underway until October 11. The company is pleased to now  announce that it has been awarded a commercialisation grant by the Federal Government to bring to market the first malaria test application on its AtomoRapid™ platform. Rapid testing away from hospitals and clinics is recognised as an increasingly important weapon in the fight, to bring infectious diseases under control in Africa. As malaria test kits have resulted in erroneous diagnosis, AtomoRapid aims to supply accurate readings with the integration of blood collection and the delivery features into the test cassette. A large scale study in Sudan revealed major user errors when using complicated malaria test kits. We all know there is a serious need in Africa for reliable, rapid diagnostic tests. Kits that are easy to use in-field, especially in remote settings. According to the Global Fund, 655,000 malaria deaths were recorded in 2010 with more than 90 per cent of the cases coming from Africa. John Kelly, the CEO & founder of Atomo Diagnostics said: “Malaria is as much of a threat to the wellbeing of Africans as HIV. We wanted to ensure that we were also able to utilise the next-generation AtomoRapid™ solution to aid in the fight against malaria” The company is currently in the process of bringing to market two products: AtomoRapid HIV and AtomoRapid Malaria, scheduled for launch in Africa later in the year. AtomoRapid™ Malaria will be manufactured in South Africa with production taking place at a new ISO 13485 certified facility. This makes it not only the world’s most user friendly rapid malaria test, Meaning an African made test that can be exported to the benefit of the rest of the world? PING! Magazine acknowledges this great achievement. What do Africans think about AtomoRapid?

Google has a new doodle to celebrate with Nigerians on its local domain at Google.com.ng.  It featured  the beautiful colours of the Nigerian flag, green and white, with a touch of different shades of green and grey patterned like a Nigerian (native) fabric popularly sewn and worn by some Nigerian ethnic groups.
