Whatsapp adds voice messaging
Whatsapp has added a new voice messaging feature. The mobile messaging smash has grown to a captive audience of more than 300 million people, up from 250 million active users less than two months ago. Although, the app still lacks the ability to host interactive voice or video conversations which is possible on Microsoft’s Skype and Blackberry’s BBM apps, it is more easily accessible and works across more platforms. Whatsapp is available on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone and Nokia S40.
The will be no limit to the duration of voice messages sent on Whatsapp. The way its software has been designed would make recordings play automatically through headphones if they are plugged in, or otherwise through the head and through the speakerphone if held away. An estimated 11 billion of which are sent every day, and as with the application’s text messages the sender of the voice messages will be able to see when they have been listened to.
The new function could also make the software more popular in countries with harder-to-type languages – such as Russia, where the 33 letters in the Cyrillic alphabet are often crammed onto narrow touchscreen buttons – or in areas with lower rates of literacy.
